Friday 8th May 2020 - 11:00 to 12:30 It was a lovely sunny day. There were plenty of people in the park - all trying to keep their distance. Especially the little girl screaming because the geese were surrounding her. There were plenty of baby birds on the lake. Three Mallard families of 9, 5 and 2 (now large) youngsters. The Coots still with 5 chicks. Canada Geese with 5 small yellow goslings and the Egyptian Geese with 3 juveniles almost as big as their parents. Coots have built a nest under the overhanging trees on the big island. The pair of Great Crested Grebes seem to have abandoned their nest nearby. To what extent the terrapins drove them off is hard to say but they didn't help. The House Sparrows are more visible and noisy these days. I did not see any finches or warblers. It was a bit late in the day for the best of the birds. Privately I had hoped to see my first hirundines for the park for the year - but I didn't. (On Monday 11-05-20 I saw my first Swift for the year at the park. The Great Crested Grebes were showing interest in their nest again.) A full list of birds seen is given in the Bird Table .
